Facial Fat Grafting in San Diego

Personal Attention & Specialized Care

What Is Fat Grafting?

Fat grafting can augment your facial features without using any synthetic materials. An added benefit of this procedure is that donor fat can be taken from trouble areas elsewhere on your body.

When to Choose Fat Grafting

The best candidates for facial fat grafting are healthy and possess realistic expectations. Facial fat grafting can be used to treat:

  • Facial creases and folds
  • Hollow Cheeks
  • Laugh Lines
  • Thin Lips

After facial fat grafting, your face will appear smoother and the targeted treatment areas will have a fuller, more youthful contour. You can also anticipate improved facial balance.

Donor fat may be liposuctioned from trouble areas in the hips, thighs, abdomen, arms or buttocks.

Fat Grafting Recovery

After fat grafting, standard dressings, tape and compression garments are applied to the treatment area. A specific massage program will be advised for the recovery period to ensure a smooth and even appearance.

Though some swelling and bruising is likely after the procedure, over-the-counter pain medication should be sufficient to manage discomfort. Swelling and bruising should resolve after 2-3 weeks. Some fat is usually absorbed naturally by the body, so the injection sites may be slightly over-filled at first to compensate for this effect.

Fat grafting eliminates many risks because it is performed using your body’s own fat cells. As with any surgery, facial fat grafting still carries a degree of risk. Potential complications include infection, bleeding, scarring, asymmetry and changes in sensitivity. Your consultation will include a medical assessment and a discussion of how you can minimize your risk of complications.

Prior to your procedure, the donor locations are marked for fat removal. These areas are cleansed and small incisions are made in hidden locations. A liposuction cannula or low pressure syringe is then inserted into the incisions. The fat is carefully withdrawn, followed by incision closure. This fat is then purified and prepared for re-injection.

The recipient sites are marked and cleansed. Fat is injected into these areas at varying depths to form an entire grid of injected fat. Massage may be used at the end of treatment to ensure even distribution.
