Breast Reconstruction Surgery
What Is Breast Reconstruction Surgery?
Breast reconstruction is achieved through several plastic surgery techniques that attempt to restore a breast to near normal shape, appearance, and size following mastectomy.
Although breast reconstruction can rebuild your breast, the results are highly variable:
- A reconstructed breast will not have the same sensation and feel as the breast it replaces.
- Visible incision lines will always be present on the breast, whether from reconstruction or mastectomy.
- Certain surgical techniques will leave incision lines at the donor site, commonly located in less exposed areas of the body such as the back, abdomen or buttocks.
A note about symmetry: If only one breast is affected, it alone may be reconstructed. In addition, a breast lift, breast reduction or breast augmentation may be recommended for the opposite breast to improve symmetry of the size and position of both breasts.
The second stage, the expander was removed and a smooth high profile round implant was placed. The Photos take 6 months after the second stage.

This patient, from Atlanta, had right breast radical mastectomy 9 years prior. She interested in breast reconstruction. She had a consultation with Dr. Jaibaji, MD double board certified plastic surgeon. During the consultation she expressed interest in reconstruction with her own tissue. She did not want to tissue expanders or implants. A full evaluation of the patient history followed by detailed examination was performed. Evaluation of the left breast, the axilla and abdomen was performed. A surgical plan was formulated. It was elected for her to have latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap. This means a skin flap
and muscle from her back will be used to reconstruct the breast. The surgery was performed in Grossmont hospital. The anesthesia was given by a board certified anesthesiologist. After the surgery she stayed in hospital for about three days and she went home after that. Her recovery was uneventful and she was pleased with the results. She returned after several months for the second stage reconstruction. That involved breast lift on the left side and reconstruction of the nipple on the right breast. She underwent two stage reconstruction. In the first stage, the right breast was reconstructed with latissimus dorsi flap.
Her post operative recovery was uneventful and she was very pleased with her outcome.
