Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is achieved through several plastic surgery techniques that attempt to restore a breast to near normal shape, appearance, and size following mastectomy.

Mastectomy surgery, or the surgical removal of the breast, can save the life of a person battling breast cancer. However, one unfortunate but unavoidable consequence is a drastic loss of breast tissue that can leave a woman feeling that she has lost an aspect of her femininity. Fortunately, Dr. Jaibaji can help replace the missing breast through breast reconstruction surgery. A reconstructed breast not only restores the appearance of the bust, but also restores self-confidence and provides a feeling of wellness and recovery.

Breast Reconstruction Information

The Breast Reconstruction Procedure

Breast reconstruction surgery is an extensive operation that is often completed in multiple stages over a period of months. In the breast reconstruction procedure, a balloon expander is inserted into the breast area beneath the skin and chest muscle in order to stretch the area out gently over the course of several weeks. During this time, Dr. Jaibaji will continue to add liquid to the balloon until the skin has stretched enough to accommodate the new breast mass. Once the skin has expanded to the desired size, Dr. Jaibaji inserts either a silicone or saline implant to recreate the breast. He can also use the patient's own skin, fat, and muscle tissue gathered from the abdomen, back, or buttocks to fill in the missing breast in a procedure called flap reconstruction. Flap breast reconstruction results in a new breast that looks and feels all natural. In some cases, flap breast reconstruction can be combined with tummy tuck surgery for a complete makeover. Dr. Jaibaji can also perform nipple reconstruction surgery for those who are interested.

Recovery From Breast Reconstruction

Recovery from breast reconstruction surgery takes approximately six weeks, and patients can expect to experience some pain and discomfort during that time. Patients may regain some feeling in their breasts, though normal sensation can never be fully recovered. Scars will remain visible during most of the healing process, but they will fade over time. Patients who choose breast reconstruction find that the drawbacks of permanent scarring are outweighed by the overall benefits of the procedure. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Jaibaji to learn how breast reconstruction surgery can benefit you.
